아재개그 [ ajaegaegeu ]

아재 in this word means 아저씨 [ ajeossi ] that Koreans use to refer to a male adult — not a family member — in an informal way. 개그 is from the English word ‘gag’.

아재개그 used to mean ‘gags that 아저씨s use’, mainly pun gags. But, with time, it has become to mean gags that are not really funny, boring, or outdated, and still usually pun-based, regardless of the gender of the person. However, some Koreans think 아재개그s are funny.

Here are some examples of 아재개그.

ex)

우주인들이 술 마시는 곳은? (A drinking place for aliens?)  –  스페이스바 (Space-bar)

미국에서 내리는 비는? (The rain in the US?)  – USB (비 [ bi ] means rain in Korean)

할아버지가 좋아하는 돈은? (The money that grandfathers like?) – 할머니 ( [ halmeoni ] meaning grandmother ) (머니 sounds like ‘money’)
