가르치다 vs. 가리키다

These two expressions can be so confusing that even Koreans make mistakes sometimes.

가르치다 means ‘to teach’ and 가리키다 means ‘to point at’.

ex)

저는 영어를 가르칩니다.(0)           저는 영어를 가리킵니다. (X)     (I teach English.)

방법을 가르쳐주세요. (0)                방법을 가리켜주세요. (X)        (Please teach me how to do it.)

그는 나의 집을 가르쳤다 (X)          그는 나의 집을 가리켰다. (0)     (He pointed at my house.)
