심심하다 [ simsimhada ]

심심하다 is used often and yet it has totally different three meanings.

  1. 심심하다 means ‘to be boring’ or ‘to be bored’

ex)

이 영화 심심하다. (This movie is boring.)

너 심심하니? (Are you bored?)

2. Koreans say 심심하다 when the food is insufficiently salted or tastes week.

ex)

저는 심심한 음식을 좋아합니다.  (I prefer food less salted or less seasoned.)

3. 심심하다 is used to express the speaker’s ardent or/and deep state of emotion. In this case, the adjective form 심심한 [ simsimhan ] is usually used.

ex)

심심한 감사의 말씀을 전합니다. (I deeply appreciate it.)

심심한 조의을 표합니다. (My deepest condolences)
