23rd Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival Gets Underway Today

The 23rd BIFAN will be screening 288 films (170 features, 118 shorts) from 49 countries. In addition to the VR Village, special programs, and audience events, industry programs such as NAFF, Korea Now, and New Media will also be featured.

The 23rd Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival will be holding its opening ceremony at 6 p.m. beginning tonight at the Bucheon Gymnasium in Gyeonggi-do.

The main concept for this year’s opening ceremony is the “NEXT 100.” In addition to celebrating the 100th year of Korean cinema, the opening ceremony will give BIFAN the chance to announce its determination to take part in forming the next 100 years of Korean cinema.

One of Korea’s top actors, Jung Woo-sung, will be making an appearance at the ceremony as the star of the show and will be taking part in a special performance. Jung first formed a relationship with BIFAN last year when the festival organized and held a special program called, “Jung Woo-sung, the Star, the Actor, the Artist.” The actor will be gracing Bucheon with his presence once again to present the audience with fantastic moments.

Global media artist Jin Siyon has taken charge of the visual telling of BIFAN’s opening ceremony concept. An LED display tunnel has been set up at the entrance of the venue to make the audience feel as if they are being drawn into the world of cinema, and video mapping technology will be used to project images on to the ceiling that will remind the audience of backdrops from movies. Jin has been establishing his own distinctive artistic world and taking his works worldwide by using media art and LED to create experimental works.

This year’s opening ceremony, which has been designed while taking into consideration the fact that the 1982 film Blade Runner was set in the year 2019, will feature extraordinary visuals and diverse performances on an enormous scale.

The opening film will be the Asian premiere of “The Gasoline Thieves”, a thriller by Edgar Nito about an innocent crush propels fourteen-year-old Lalo’s descent into the criminal underworld of illegal gasoline extraction.

The ceremony will be broadcast live nationally on TV via SBS.

The 23rd BIFAN will be taking place for 11 days from June 27 to July 7 in the city of Bucheon.
