Attendance at Korea’s major theme parks and water parks were down significantly from 2017.
According to industry sources, the World’s Theme Park Entertainment Association (TEA) and global consulting firm Aecom recently announced results of the top 25 theme parks in 2018.
Lotte World ranked 17th in the world with 5.96 million visitors and Everland ranked 19th with 5.85 million people on the list based on the number of visitors.
The total number of visitors to the top 25 theme parks last year was 251.99 million, up 3.3% from the previous year.
Among them, only four of the theme parks decreased in comparison with the previous year: Lotte World, Everland, Japan’s Osaka Universal Studios, and Kuwana Nagashima Spa Land.
In particular, Lotte World and Everland suffered a decline of 17.6 percent and 9.5 percent year-on-year in 2017, respectively.
First place was Magic Kingdom theme park of Walt Disney World Resort Florida, followed by Disneyland in California and Tokyo Disneyland.
In addition, Hongcheon Ocean World and Yongin Caribbean Bay, which are included in the world’s 20 water parks, saw 1.24 million and 1.2 million visitors, respectively, last year, down 5.0% and 13.0%.
Hongcheon Ocean World was ranked 15th and Yongin Caribbean Bay 17th.
The dip in attendance is being attributed to the lack of Chinese tourists last year due to THAAD, as well as a drop in attendance of domestic tourists due to the aging population and more people enjoying holidays overseas.
