Six Costco Branches to Close this Wednesday

BUSAN, South Korea -- Costco will observe a voluntary closure this Wednesday, December 12th in accordance of joining in the effort of the recent Chain Store Association and the RIDA agreement.

According to their website, Busan, Ilsan, Yangjae, Daejon, Sangbong and Ulsan will continue voluntary Wednesday closures on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month until revised DIDA ordinances are commenced.

Daegu and Yangpyung branches of the American discount wholesaler will continue to close on the second and fourth Sunday of each month.

Costco has drawn the ire of the Korean government in recent months by defying local governments ordinances to have discount stores closed twice a month.

IWA Northeast Asia Regional Office to be Established in Busan

BUSAN, South Korea -- Busan City successfully hosted the International Water Association's World Water Congress & Exhibition 2012 earlier this year, from September 16-21, as the biggest conference in the IWA's history, with the participation of about 7,100 water related professionals from 130 countries. As a follow-up project, the IWA Northeast Asia Regional Office will soon be established in Busan.      

Free Bike Rental Available at Nakdong River Ecological Park

BUSAN, South Korea -- Busan Nakdong River Project Executive Office is providing the public with free bike rentals at Nakdong River Ecological Park. 

Park visitors can rent free bike at four locations in the Nakdong River Ecological Park - Samnak Riverside Park (130 bikes), Hwamyeong Ecological Park (120 bikes), Maekdo Ecological Park (80 bikes) and Daejeo Ecological Park (100 bikes).

The bike rental shop opens from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. all year round. Bikes are available for two hours a day per person during weekdays and for one hour a day per person for weekends. To rent a bike, you need to present your identification with your contact number. One person can rent as many as two bikes. The rental shop will be closed on rainy days. 

An official of the Nakdong River Project Executive Office said, We opened free bike rental shops to encourage our citizens and tourists ride a bike and enjoy outside.  

Construction of Busan Port International Passenger Terminal Under Way

BUSAN, South Korea -- Construction work on the Busan Port International Passenger Terminal broke ground on October 26. One of the main facilities of the North Port Redevelopment Project, the Busan Port International Passenger Terminal is due to be completed in December 2014 and will be the largest international ferry and cruise passenger terminal in Asia.

At a total cost of 236.3 billion won, the Busan Port International Passenger Terminal will consist of five 5-story buildings on a 92,945 square meter site between the former Pier 3 and Pier 4 at Busan North Port.

Three Teenage Girls Jump to Their Death in Nambu

BUSAN, South Korea -- Three teenaged girls jumped to their death together this week, sparking an intense debate over suicide websites where the girls apparently had contacted each other to end their lives.

The girls, aged between 16 to 19, jumped off a 15-story apartment building in Gwangan-dong after drinking soju together and locking the door to the roof. Two of the girls traveled from Gwang-ju and Daejeon to meet over the weekend, where they watched the fireworks Sunday night before ending their lives Tuesday night around 10:30 p.m. According to the Joongang Ilbo, the police said two of the girls,Yoon and Kim, attempted suicide together back in August in a motel room in Busan. The charcoal they burned didn’t work, and the owner of the motel smelled the smoke, foiling their attempt.

Busan Opera House Blueprint Revealed

BUSAN, South Korea -- Busan City has revealed a blueprint of the much anticipated Busan Opera House, which will become a new cultural icon for Busan City upon its completion. The winning entry of the Busan Opera House International Design Competition was submitted by Norwegian design firm Snøhetta.

The new Busan Opera House will be located in the Busan North Port Development area and will be very accessible, with a democratic use of space. It will even be possible for the public to access the large roof, where outdoor performances will be possible.

The new Busan Opera House will be located in the maritime culture district of the Busan North Port Development area and will house an auditorium with a seating capacity of 1,800, designed exclusively for operatic performances.

Braces Aren’t Just for Kids Anymore

BUSAN, South Korea -- Gone are the days when getting braces for that perfect smile is viewed only for children and teens. According to the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO), the number of adults in the US getting braces has risen 25 percent in the last decade, with roughly 20 percent of all orthodontic patients now comprising people over 25.

"The stigma of being 'too old' for braces has diminished for the most part," said Dr. Stephen Tracey in a recent interview with the LA Times, adding that his oldest patient was 80.

Busan Fireworks Festival Begins Friday

BUSAN, South Korea -- The eighth Busan Fireworks Festival takes place at Gwangalli Beach and Busan Asiad Main Stadium from Oct. 26 to 27. This year, the theme is love. The goal is to make Gwangalli Beach in front of Gwangan Bridge, the main stage of the fireworks festival, a world-famous proposal spot.

Celebrating the Busan Fireworks Festival, top-class Hallyu stars will put on K-pop performances from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Oct. 26 at Busan Asiad Main Stadium. The three-hour performance will also include a small-scale fireworks show.

Three Observation Decks Now Completed on Suyeong Riverside

BUSAN, South Korea -- Suyeong-gu District has completed a Suyeong River downstream square deck construction project to build a water-front observatory at the Suyeong Riverside and the completion ceremony will be held at one of the decks near Suyeong Hyundai Apartment 103-dong on October 16. At a total cost of 1.8 billion won, three square decks on the promenade of the Suyeong Riverside between Suyeonggyo Bridge and Jwa Suyeonggyo Bridge have been built. 

To provide a place for citizens to relax, a pergola and bench were placed on the deck, and to enable the use of the deck as a performing stage, outdoor lighting at night and music broadcasting equipment has been installed as well. A beautiful night view of the APEC Naru Park and Busan Cinema Center, located on the opposite bank of the Suyeong River from the new square decks, is expected to attract tourists to these new tourist attractions.     

BJFEZ Signs MOU with Department of Commerce of Zhejiang Province, China

BUSAN, South Korea -- On September 14 2012, Busan-Jinhae Free Economic Zone Authority and the Department of Commerce of Zhejiang Province, China signed an Economic Cooperation MOU at Convention Center in Zhejiang Province, China.

This MOU is a follow-up to the visit of Commissioner Ha of BJFEZ to Zhejiang Province in April 2012. After four months of negotiations on the issue of mutual investment, and cooperation to improve the two regions economic development.

The primarily industries of Zhejiang province consist of machinery, electronics, IT, petrochemicals, and the number of private companies are about 520,000 and they are driving the local economy. Especially Wenzhou area in Zhejiang province is well known as the hub of the commercial supremacy and real estate market of China.
