Throughout history, whale hunting was a large part of the livelihood of Ulsan’s early inhabitants. Now dominated by manufacturing, Ulsan and its people are still very proud of their history of whaling and throw an annual celebration of it.
This weekend sees the return of the Ulsan Whale Festival, which saw its inception in 1995.
This years event begins June 7th through June 9th.
For three days, a variety of events are planned around the Jangsaengpo Whale Culture Special Zone, beginning today.
Plenty of events are planned for this weekend, including daily and nightly musical concerts, a bodybuilding and best body contest, ice sculptures of whales, dance teams and a parade.
Admission to the festival is free.
