Colors of Asia, Revisited – The Case of ASEAN and Korea @ ASEAN Culture House
Aug 22 @ 10:00 am – 6:00 pm
Colors of Asia, Revisited - The Case of ASEAN and Korea @ ASEAN Culture House

From July 11 to September 2, 2018, the ASEAN Culture House(ACH), which is operated by the Korea Foundation (President Sihyung Lee) will hold the ACH Special Exhibition “Colors of Asia, Revisited – The Case of ASEAN and Korea.” This exhibition celebrates the first anniversary of the opening of the ACH whose establishment was one of the outcomes listed in the Joint Statement of the ASEAN-ROK Commemorative Summit in Busan in 2014.

This exhibition was realized in collaboration with the Department of Foreign Affairs of the Philippines, the National Commission for Culture and the Arts(NCCA), the Embassy of the Philippines in Seoul and the ROK Embassy in Manila.

Haute couture costumes abroad for the first time

“Colors of Asia, Revisited” presents haute couture costumes created by prestigious designer Renee Salud and made of fabrics donated by ASEAN countries and the ROK. They were previously presented at the year-end fashion show “Colors of Asia-Pacific,” organized by the Philippine DFA last December.

Encounter of the Philippines’ fashion ambassador and the backbone of the Korean fashion industry

Visitors will be able to enjoy revisited contemporary aesthetics of fashion, created with traditional elements by the two designers whose fashion worlds merge in this exhibition.

Renee Salud: Philippine fashion ambassador and trailblazer

Renee Salud is both a fashion designer and cultural producer who is considered an icon of the Philippine fashion industry. Throughout his life, he has contributed to the development and promotion of the Philippine fashion industry. A trailblazer for Philippine fashion, he actively uses indigenous materials in his shows to increase the presence of uniquely Philippine fashion on the global stage. With his collection created for the “Colors of Asia-Pacific” fashion show, Salud aims to broaden his fashion world beyond the Philippines to include fabrics and idea from all over the Asia Pacific region.

Lee Jean Youn: Once a rising star, now the backbone of the Korean fashion industry

Lee Jean Youn is well-known for his reinterpretation of the beauty and sentiments of Korean traditions with a contemporary touch.  His shows were displayed all over the world, including in Hong Kong, New York, Paris, Madrid and Qingdao. Lee transforms the aesthetics of Korean traditions into contemporary art works, and his creativity has caught the attention of the global fashion world.

Popular medium of fashion attracts people to the ACH and raises their understanding of the ASEAN region and its culture

As one of the staff members of the ACH put it, “This exhibition will not only greatly enhance the Korean public’s understanding of Renee Salud’s beautiful art and philosophy but also strengthen the friendship between Korea and the Philippines, as well as ASEAN as a whole, through the popular medium of fashion.

The Opening ceremony will take place on Wednesday, July 11 at 17:00, followed by a designer talk featuring Mr. Salud and Mr. Lee. This event is free admission and is open to the public.

For further information, please contact Ms. Tae Kyo YOO on 051-775-2032 or visit the ACH Webpage at http://ach.or.kr

Wordz Only+48 @ Ovantgarde
Aug 25 @ 8:30 pm – 11:45 pm
Wordz Only+48 @ Ovantgarde

Wordz Only, the oldest sibling of Poetry Plus, will return for an evening of poetry, short stories, personal narratives, testimonials, limericks, sonnets, raps and rhymes, & tall tales. Wordz Only+48 will be the 104th event under the 18 year old Poetry Plus event series umbrella. Everyone is encouraged to attend and participate. This is a great event for both first timers and savvy performance veterans, as well as everyone in between!

For Wordz Only+48, we will feature Seoul-based poet, spoken word artist, singer, songwriter, and actor CeCe Kim. I’m thrilled that we can feature our very first Seoul-based performer at this event and I hope CeCe’s feature is just the first of many more such exchanges between Busan & Seoul. I think you will end up loving her performance.

*Anthony Velasquez, who has recently published in several literary journals in the United States, will once again serve as a co-host and tone-setter.

*Additionally, the musical stylings of Jinju-based Rachel Szabo will precede the Wordz Only+48 event. She is a very unique musician. Be on time and don’t miss the chance to check her out.

*The Process: everyone who wishes to perform will be able to write their names on a slip of paper and toss it into the Wordz Only floating lunch box. One of our luminaries (read: anyone), will draw the first name and that’s how we will begin. It’s your turn to perform when the preceding performer draws your name from the lunch box (Just an FYI: this does not apply for our feature). All these performance slots are for 5 to 7 minutes. Whether you are a beginner or a veteran, we encourage you to practice before the event and make sure your piece falls within these time parameters. If you only have one 2 minute piece, well, that’s fine, too. Getting to 5 minutes is not required.

*The Ovantgarde is a brand new place and it is sure to become a fixture in the local art scene. Our last event here went wonderfully and the Ovantgarde is the perfect home for our events. This place is cool.

After Wordz Only concludes, the very popular and acclaimed Korean band Happy People (해피피플) will play an extended set deeper into the night. They possess a strong reggae musical vibration in their instrumentation and sound. They definitely make a joyful noise. If you stick around, you will most likely end up digging them.

Before Wordz Only, beginning at 6:30pm, there will be another special event connected to our group. More information on that will be forthcoming soon;-).

To get there: In Kyungsung (subway stop 212), come up exit 3 and walk straight by the Starbucks on your right. At the first street, which slopes down, turn right. And turn right again at the very next street. After 20 meters or so, turn right again into the short alley with the big red sign for the Litre coffee shop on the tiny corner. Walk to the back. Look left. Go down the steps! Grab a beverage and a chair. Be wary of being too fashionably late because you’ll risk not being able to secure a chair or advantageous standing spot.

Wordz Only+48 promises to sizzle! Come one, come all, be there or be happy elsewhere;-)
